Nzingha Hooker joined NELP in 2019 as a staff attorney on the Social Insurance and Work Equity teams. At NELP, her work focuses on collaborating with and providing technical assistance to NELP’s state partners, through research, advocacy, exploration, and engagement on policies related to unemployment insurance and other social insurance programs and increasing access to quality jobs for Black workers.

All of Nzingha’s work is grounded in a racial equity analysis and aimed at actively contributing to NELP’s work to dismantle structural racism, build worker power, and address income inequality.

Prior to coming to NELP, Nzingha represented people with low-income as a family law attorney at a DC nonprofit organization Bread for the City and as an Assistant Public Defender in Georgia.

She also currently serves as a member of the executive committee member for Law 4 Black Lives DC and co-chair of the L4BL DC policy committee. As a part of her work with L4BL DC, she provides technical, policy, and legal assistance to a few DC Black-led and anti-racist organizations.

Nzingha’s mission is to support power building and leadership development in communities of color and to use her legal experiences and skills in service of the vision to eradicate white supremacy and anti-Blackness.

Nzingha is admitted to practice in the District of Columbia and Georgia.
