Controller – Part Time (Job Share)

The National Employment Law Project (NELP) seeks two dynamic, experienced, and skilled finance professionals to lead our financial operations under a job-sharing arrangement. NELP has experienced rapid growth in recent years resulting in more complex financial management.  For the past year, NELP has partnered with the firm Your Part Time Controller, who has filled the Controller position.  An assessment of our internal needs indicates that NELP would be better served with an internal team that includes two part time Controllers each working 60% of full time (NELP has a 35 hour work week and, therefore, 21 hours is equivalent to 60% of full time) and with defined areas of responsibility and specialization vs a single person in the Controller position.

NELP’s annual operating budget is approximately $12M and annually manages over 30 grants from private foundations that fund various NELP programs.  Under the terms of several of our grants, NELP also issues subgrants. Over the past two years NELP has distributed more than 60 grants to partner organizations.  Therefore, we are seeking candidates with expertise and experience in nonprofit accounting practices and rules and who have built and managed internal systems and controls for organizations that run multiple programs and have an annual budget of at least $7 to $10M.

By designing this position to be a part time role and job share, this position offers flexibility for individuals who are seeking rewarding and challenging work but are not seeking a full-time position.  The part time position is for 21 hours/week, which qualifies for full health insurance benefits.  Currently, NELP is working 100% remotely.  Because relationships among members of the operations team, our fund raising team and NELP’s program staff are critical to the success of this position, when NELP returns to the office, we expect the individuals in this role to work from one of NELP’s offices at least one day a week.  We strongly prefer to fill these two positions in either New York City or Washington, DC.

What You Will Do

As one of NELP’s two part time controllers, you will manage high-level and managerial accounting and oversee the financial activities of the organization. The two Controllers will handle all aspects of accounting from payroll to tax compliance. These positions will report to the Chief Operating Officer (COO), and in partnership with the COO, assist with the development of internal control policies, procedures, and financial planning as needed.

The COO, in collaboration with the part time Controllers, will organize the responsibilities of the into clearly defined areas of responsibility while also providing cross training so that the teammates can cover for each other when necessary.  The Controller responsibilities will include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Manage all aspects of accounting, billing, financial statements, general ledger, cost accounting, payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, budgeting, tax compliance, inventory accounting, cost accounting, revenue recognition, and various special analyses.
  • Collaborate with the COO to develop team and financial objectives; track and report progress against objectives.
  • Assist COO with preparing the annual organizational budget, forecasting requirements, scheduling expenditures, monitoring/funding balances and analyzing variances. Regularly review financial reporting and forecasts with the Executive Team.  Prepare reporting for the NELP board.
  • Partner with Human Resources on all salary and benefits related activities and initiatives.
  • Partner with NELP’s Development team and program management to develop and maintain tools for managing grants and support grant budget preparation, tracking and reporting.
  • Support NELP’s programmatic leads by providing financial education, as needed. Build strong internal relationships to ensure that accounting functions support program delivery. Lead the team budget creation and management processes and conduct regular reviews of financial activity against budget.
  • Serve as the liaison to the NELP staff union finance committee, providing financial information and education.
  • Plan and prepare accurate and timely monthly, quarterly and annual financial reports.
  • Provide training to new and existing staff regarding expense reporting, PTO, and lobbying reports.
  • Serve as the primary lead for the annual audit; organize information and statements for audits and both internal and external auditors.
  • Define, benchmark, document, maintain and implement accounting policies and operational best practices.
  • Ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal laws regarding finances, tax filings, reporting, including ensuring NELP complies with all additional legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Additional duties as assigned.

Who You Are

  • You have 12 or more years of experience as an accountant, accounting supervisor, or manager, at least 5 years of which is in nonprofit accounting.
  • You have exceptional knowledge of finance, accounting, budgeting, cost accounting and cost control principles, and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).  You have advanced knowledge of bookkeeping and accounting best practices, laws, standards, and state/national regulations.
  • You are analytical and exceptionally curious. You have a skill for identifying unusual and unexpected changes in financial activity or trends and are tenacious in tracking down and understanding underlying causes.
  • You are committed to continuous improvement and have experience in developing and implementing improvements or recommendations.
  • You are detail oriented. You enjoy working with numbers and have experience working with multiple stakeholders in developing forecasts and managing budgets.
  • You are systems oriented.  You have worked on or led teams to develop and implement new systems and workflows as needed to support the financial management needs of the organization or ensure compliance with laws and regulations.
  • You have a passion for financial analysis and have a talent for explaining complex financial concepts and data to non-finance professionals.  You have developed or maintained finance “dashboards” and data visualizations that improve organizational understanding of financial performance.
  • You excel at working with all levels of employees and external vendors (banks, benefits providers, payroll, insurance carriers and other vendors).
  • You have excellent computer skills, experience in accounting software and Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel, FundEZ, or other system knowledge.
  • You are interested in expanding your analysis and knowledge about the role that structural racism plays in our society and institutions are committed to NELP’s priority of centering racial equity.

Start Date, Location, Compensation & Benefits:  This full-time exempt position will be based in New York City; Washington, DC; or Berkeley, CA (strong preference for New York of DC). The start date will be as soon as possible. The salary range for 21 hours a week for the Controller position is $69,000 to $75,000 depending upon years of experience.
