Staff Attorney

The National Employment Law Project (NELP) seeks a staff attorney to support campaigns to improve economic security for low-wage and immigrant workers. This position is a unique opportunity for a dynamic leader to be part of NELP’s team working to improve jobs and dismantle barriers to employment.

About NELP

NELP is a national non-profit with offices in New York, Washington D.C., Seattle and Berkeley. NELP promotes federal, state and local policies to create good jobs, strengthen workers’ upward mobility, enforce worker rights, and improve benefits and services for the unemployed. In collaboration with national and grassroots partners, NELP advances its work through research, advocacy, litigation support, technical assistance and strategic communications designed to raise wages, end wage theft and workplace violations, improve workplace safety and health, strengthen unemployment insurance, ensure employer accountability for all workers – including workers in contract employment, encourage fair chance hiring practices, and promote a comprehensive policy framework to build a good jobs economy.  NELP works from the ground up to build change, in close partnership with community groups, unions, faith-based organizations, legal services program and policymakers.

Job Responsibilities
The staff attorney, to be based in NELP’s New York City office, is responsible for the following:

  • Leading  local, state and federal advocacy in key policy priority areas, including caregiver rights, expanded worker organizing rights, and protections for workers in contracted and “on-demand jobs, by engaging key constituencies, allied organizations, and policymakers.
  • Providing legal, policy and strategic assistance for labor standards campaigns, including drafting policy briefs, legal analyses, and model legislation.
  • Drafting reports, op-eds, blogs, and educational materials, and engaging in strategic communications.
  • Drafting amicus briefs and supporting strategic litigation related to wage and hour, contingent work and other labor standards issues.
  • Representing NELP in public forums, legislative and agency hearings, and in the media.



  • Substantial advocacy and research experience promoting labor and employment rights, civil rights and racial justice, or other economic justice issues. Experience in labor law and organizing especially welcome.
  • J.D. required, with five to seven years of related legal experience preferred.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills (Spanish-language fluency a plus).
  • Demonstrated commitment to economic justice and low-income issues.

Compensation & Benefits:  Compensation dependent on years of experience based on NELP’s collective bargaining scale.  Excellent benefits package. This position is in NELP’s bargaining unit, represented by National Organization of Legal Service Workers, UAW Local 2320.
